Here's a nice fast and simple project for today's blog post. And it's great for kids too! I was watching my nephew the other day and after he finished his homework I gave him the option of reading comic books or making snowflakes. Since he's not a huge fan of reading and just finished reading about 20 pages for homework he immediately shouted make snowflakes. So I had him help by reading off the directions from the blog (got him to do more reading after all) and help with glittering. So I highly recommend this project! The only thing is that practice makes perfect so don't be disappointed if your first snowflake isn't perfect - mine totally looked rigged but it's okay every snowflake is different!
- Snowflake print out to use as stencil
- Glitter (The glitter shown was picked up at the Dollar Tree)
- Hot glue gun
- Glue sticks (I used at least 2 for 1 snowflake)
- Soap detergent (to create a buffer for ease of removal)
- Wax paper
- Martha Stewart Glittering Glue w/ Brush (Or Mod Podge and a brush)
- String or wire
- Paper plate (or something to sprinkle glitter all over :))
Take a piece of wax paper and place it over the template. I taped down both the paper template and then the wax paper was also taped down to prevent it from moving.
Drop a little bit of soap detergent and a few water drops and run it around evenly onto the snowflake area. (Note you should probably only put the soap down once you're ready to work with the hot glue otherwise it will just dry up on the hot glue will stick to the wax paper.)
Trace your snowflake starting from the outside in towards the middle (This way was easier for me.)
Make sure you have a constant pressure and fill in any gaps and make sure the lines are thick and well connected. Once the hot glue dries you can peel it off. And if there's any wax paper still stuck onto the back you can run it under cold water and slowly rub it off.
Place the snowflake on a disposable plate (or piece of paper) and brush on the glue. Cover it with glitter to your liking!
The next step I don't have a photo of it, but once it's dry, take a piece of thread or wire and use the hot glue to glue it to the back. The silver glitter didn't show up as well as I wanted it to, but the design was a good one!
Here's the 2nd snowflake! For the 2nd snowflake I kept the tip of the glue gun touching the wax paper and kind of spread the glue evenly with the tip of the glue gun to keep the flatter consistency. I really liked how it turned out.
Hang it up on your tree or windows once you're all done and enjoy!
